Three years ago, I was stressed out, needing a new roof. It had a leak that caused about $12,000 in water damage. I was told my insurance company would cancel me if I didn’t replace the roof within 6 months. After 4 years of not being able to work, playing catch up wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I filed chapter 13 bankruptcy in 2008. One of the stipulations is not being able to have anything on credit until the bankruptcy is discharged 3 years later. I needed a $16,000 roof and couldn’t have anything on credit. In the middle of bankruptcy, my credit score was less than desirable. If I refinanced my house to pay for the roof, I wouldn’t be able to afford the payments. Still doing 2-3 hours of daily cancer treatments, I didn’t have the time or energy to work more than full time. What do I do? I was stressed out and the 2 tumors were growing again.
Someone introduced me to Amanda Reynolds. She is the founder of All About Hope, a 501c3 non profit that works with stage 4 cancer patients, getting their end of life paperwork done, assists in planning their memorial service and grants them a wish on their bucket list. I didn’t want to do the paperwork, but it was part of the deal. All About Hope found several different companies to donate the labor and the materials to replace my roof. All I had to do after the paperwork and planning my zombie funeral, was focus on my healing. Yes, I want everyone to dress up like zombies, including full make up, at my funeral. It’ll be fun and something probably all of the attendees will remember. How interesting to be driving by a cemetery and seeing a bunch of zombies at dusk. Anyway, Amanda organized it and got it done. Why a roof on my bucket list? Because I’m not done here yet. I needed the roof to take the stress off me so I could continue healing.
I now volunteer for All About Hope. Amanda and I have a radio show “Buckets of Hope” on Wed from 3-4pm pst on 1150am Seattle or at 1150kknw.com or archives at www.chatwithwomen.com
